published in the early 19th century, a hand coloured geographical race
game describing the wonders to be found in South America, a place that would have been unknown and mysterious to most people then. My version
describes an imagined vision of a re-wilded Britain, with wolves, bears,
bison, lynx and more! Most of these animals have lived in this country in the past, or are being considered for re-introduction. I like the idea of not needing to go to the otherside of the world to experience mystery awe and wonder.

Although this alludes to an imagined landscape, there is still much around us that can inspire such feelings if we look close enough. Something that became more apparent during the various lockdowns and people began to look closer to home for their entertainment and curiosity.

This is a handcoloured print, 420 x 594 mm. Archival digital print which is then handcoloured in watercolours. Not much room for mistakes when colouring in, so a bit of a challenge to get it right!

I am working on my Procreate skills using the ipad to 'paint', and hope to eventaully have a full colour digital version as well. 'Painting' on an ipad is quite a change from real life, so it might take some time to get used to!

See previous post on some of my other board game inspired prints

Anna Walshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09801528291344994329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3952721875051840932.post-88816641335666203882021-03-25T09:40:00.004-07:002021-03-25T09:40:40.338-07:00Trakai Castle Ex-Libris
Last year I entered an Ex-Libris (book plate) competition in Lithuania for Trakai Peninsula Castle, which was based on unicorns so I couldn't resist!

Back in 1962 a unicorn artefact thought to be from the 14th Century, was unearthed by archaeologists in the grounds of the caste, and has since been adopted as a symbol of the castle, and so became the subjct for this competition.

I posted off my entry to Lithuania some months ago, and I had no idea if it had arrived until I got an email in February with a copy of the catalogue that included my image. I think it was included in an exhibition in the castle but difficult to tell...

The main gist of the competition was to use the symbol of the unicorn and include the words 'Ex-Libris' and also who t was dedicated to (I chose the castle itself). My unicorn is based on the Lithuanian heavy draft horse. I did originally also have a picture of the castle in, but it it didn't work in the design so I removed it. Ex-libris are traditionally done using printmaking methods, but CGD (computer generated design) was included in this competition, although mine is originally hand drawn, the design is put together using a computer.

I have also included a design for another Ex-libris I entered, for which I was not successful, but I enjoyed making it so I thought it was worth putting up. This time it is an English shire horse with its decorations, and the 'flights' in its mane spelling out 'Ex-libris', as this time it was dedicated to me and I love shire horses!

Anna Walshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09801528291344994329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3952721875051840932.post-65458717330965249712021-02-23T04:39:00.000-08:002021-02-23T04:39:42.208-08:00Animal Board games and Class of 2020 exhibitionSome other work I had been working on last year (2020) is a series of prints based on Victorian board games. I had recently come across The Swan of Elegance and other beautifully illustrated games, and the mix of the illustrations and the social messages I found eccentric and unique, and I started forming ideas as to how I could use them.

When the pandemic hit, lots of stories about animals and wildlife taking over areas usually busy with humans began to appear, along with commentary on social media as to whether many of them were true or not, and if it mattered. 'Emissaries of Hope and Possibility' is the result of the research I made into these stories . The images in the ovals, which make up the route for the game, depict various stories that appeared on social media and the news, fake and real, of wildlife taking over during the pandemic in areas usually full of humans. Many turned out to be fake and were debunked, my favourite being that lions has been deployed on the streets of Russia by Putin to keep people in check!

The title comes from a New York Times article about re-wilding our cities on social media. There were also several articles doing the rounds about whether many of these stories were fake or real, and if it mattered. They were spreading feelings of hope during a desperate time, and many gave glimpses of what a post - covid world could look like if we took the lessons on board.

Emissaries of Hope and Possibility, hand coloured digital print 42 x 50 cms

Reading about the coronavirus and the potential for 'mindboggling numbers of viruses' to appear if we carry along the path we are on, abusing nature and the planet, I found deeply disturbing.

Zoonotic viral spillover is the transmission of a pathogen from a vertebrate animal to a human, and in this 'game' one of the theories of how new viruses end up infecting humans, when they had previously been circulating harmlessly among bats is explained. Deforestation in rain forests, to make way for intensive farming for global demand for cheap food, leads to the bats leaving their home and setting up nearer to humans. They then pass the virus onto other animals who are even closer to humans, such as domestic animals, or those exploited and packed in unnatural environments, such as those in wet markets or the fur trade. These animals are much closer to humans and the virus eventually mutteus and jumps to them. A simplistic explanation of what is a deeply complex problem, at the heart of which seems to be an exploitation of the natural world and its resources to mainly satisfy the greed of consumerist societies.

'Emissaries of Hope and Possibility' is a more lighthearted look at human relationships with animals during this pandemic, where as 'Zoonotic Viral Spillover' has a more urgent and serious message highlighting the possible consequences if we do no act now.

Zoonotic Viral Spillover, hand coloured digital print 42 x 50 cms

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: medium; white-space: normal;">At the end of 2020 these prints were exhibited in <a href="https://rodkitson.art/" style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: medium; white-space: normal;" target="_blank">'Class of 2020' exhibition at Surrey Quays shopping centre<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: medium; white-space: normal;">, organised by artist Rod Kitson. I was delighted to take part in Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair again this year - albeit a somewhat different event this year as with so many things! This year was fully online, and you could browse the exhibition virtually through the online portal - almost like being there in person! One of the advantages was that wherever in the world you were, you could still 'visit'.

The pieces I had selected this year were from a series of handcoloured screen prints called 'Disrupters', which I created earlier this year. They were inspired by an article I read about an unusual zebra foal that had been spotted (no pun intended!), which was spotty rather than stripey, probably due to a genetic mutation. It was so beautiful and unaware of its uniqueness, I was compelled to look into other animals that we assume will look a particular way, and when they don't, are utterly mesmerising. These animals are disrupting the normal genetic pattern.

Most new mutations reduce the fitness of their carriers, that is, they are deleterious and will be selected against, so that the vast majority of them will eventually be removed from the population. In rare cases, the mutation is advantageous and is positively selected. Without mutation, which introduces new variation into the population, there can be no selection.
I see these animals as pioneers, trying out something new to see if it will succeed. Everything is at stake, life or death. A new 'look' could save its species, or, more likely, end with it.

The zebra foal with spots instead of stripes stands out in the crowd, but it is oblivious to its unusual look. Sadly it is likely it will not live beyond its youth, the tried and tested stripy formula of its counterparts as yet creates the strongest herd.
Pseudo melanistic tiger - Pseudo-melanism, or abundism, is a variant of pigmentation, characterised by enlarged stripes in the tiger, making it appear darker.
The Quinling pandas are a subspecies of the Giant panda. They are found in the Quinling mountains and differ by its smaller skull, light and brown fur and eye spots being under the lower lid rather than around the eyes.
The King Cheetah appears to be coming a more common sight (even having its own name to distinguish it from its more spotty usual relatives), a possible explanation being its unusual stripes help it hide better in darker areas.
Most of these mutations are thought to be a result of inbreeding.

As populations shrink, and the genetic pool with them, there are less and less opportunities to try out something new, and save themselves from disappearing forever. Hail these pioneers in their last chance saloon.

Black Out Line Screen Printed onto Hahnemuhle 300gsm Etching Paper, Then Hand Coloured with water colours. The idea was to create a postcard of a scene along the Trafalgar Way route, which runs from Falmouth in Cornwall to The Admiralty in Whitehall, London (the journey of the naval messenger who brought home the news from The Battle of Trafalgar in 1805).

I looked along the route to see which places inspire me, or I know well. As a London resident St.James's Park is one of my favourite places to visit and see the wildlife, especially the pelicans. There must have been pelicans there in 1805, possibly watching on, as apparently there have been pelicans there since 1664.

The pelicans of St. James's Park are a popular tourist attraction, the type of thing a tourist may buy a postcard of, as an unexpected oasis in the centre of busy London. St. James's Park is a stones throw from the Trafalgar way route, and in the distance you can see the lake, then Horse Guards and I think the Old Admiralty buildings along Whitehall, where the final delivery was made. The style of the postcard also echoes the 1805 era.

The closing date of the competition was originally in September, but as with many things has been extended until April next year. However, in recognition of those entries already submitted a little halfway home competition was held, and my piece was one of three selected for a prize!<span style="font-family: Helvetica; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">

<span style="font-family: Helvetica; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">

<span style="font-family: Helvetica; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">

Greeting from the Pelicans of St. James's Park by Anna Walsh © the artist

These are in an edition of 14, each one is screen printed by Dantes Press (in our studio) and then I individually colour each print in with watercolours, which is quite a slow but enjoyable process!

The print was inspired by the sounds of birds during lockdown. As I don't have a garden and the only options for getting outside to green spaces were very busy local parks, the sights and sounds of birds singing was one of the small pleasures and reminders of freedom we normally take so much for granted in the U.K.
The exhibition is a yearly show selected from work submitted by artists based in Southwark, and this years theme is urban nature. The show is put on at the prestigious hotel The London Bridge Hotel.

'London Animal Stars', my 16 piece artwork made up of animal myths and legends of London as star constellations, will be on show at hte hotel until May this year. There are some Southwark animal stories in this piece - The Fox Who Climbed the Shard and The Walworth Giraffes both feature.

The 16 images can be seen as individual pieces, but have been designed to be viewed in 4 x 4 grid. The ghostly image of the River Thames (depicted as The Milky Way is often seen in celestial maps) links them all together, and they are roughly in order as if you were looking at the night sky.

I have used London Animal myths as I love the visual language of vintage celestial globes and maps, but wanted to make the stories of the myths and legends more relevant to London life, as well as highlight the rich history of animal stories in London.

The whole piece will be for sale at the exhibition, it is an open edition, so more than one available! Or if you can't stretch for that, I have a postcard book version available to buy from the Garudio Studiage website.
Billed as 'London's only Contemporary Print Fair', it promises to be a spectacular homage to all things print based, with hundreds of sumptuous prints by well-known and lesser known artists for sale.

A well as exhibiting 4 pieces from the open call, I was also delighted to be asked to produce a print for their exclusive editions, and have produced a new screen print for this! I have turned the two digital prints of North and South Circular Celestial Menagerie (see previous post), into a single screen print with north and south London celestial skies, featuring animals myths and legends of London. 70 x 50cms, in edition of 17. The print is called Celestial Creatures of The City, and is available to purchase form the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair here.
It is a system that combines both the poetic symbol and hard fact, describing the relationship between the invisible (human imagination) and the visible (stars). As a longtime Londoner, and my interest in anthrozoology (interactions between humans and other animals), the stories of animals in the city often capture my imagination. For this series I researched relevant stories that corresponded with those of the animals used to symbolise the star constellations, but were London-centric. The North and South circular references the road that encloses London, and in these prints London boroughs in the south/north feature on the celestial ring-road.
These prints can be bought on the Garudio Studiage shop, and will be exhibited as part of the Woolwich Print Fair, which I am delighted to be taking part in in November (more about that later!).
The exhibition will be a mixture of screen and digital prints, as I find each method works for different prints. The title of this one is a reference to the fashion world and its frivolous encouragement of discarding items for the latest fashion. The creatures in this print remind us where much of our creative inspiration come from, and that wildlife and the natural world should be treasured and protected for generations to come.

For this exhibition I have been producing some new prints, some screen prints, some digital. I will write up a blog post for some of these pieces separately, as there's much to write about! In the mean time, there is some information on Garudio Studiage website...

Lessons in Things is taken from a beautiful book I own from the Parisian shop Deyrolle, it is a direct translation of 'Leçons de Choses', the title of the book, which contains posters and charts depicting old illustrated educational charts, mainly of animal and plants. Lessons in Things seemed an appropriately vague and arbitrary title for my exhibition, which will consist of charts, maps and diagrams with an anthroloologic (the study of human interactions with other animals) slant.
More recently I decided it worthy of being slightly adapted and being made available as a print. It is the result of much time spent researching supposed big cats sightings in the U.K. - some more believable and credible than others! I think my favourite is the South Wales Panther, said to be '100% a cuddly toy' by the British Big Cat Society!

All illustrations are from original hand drawings.

The print is on high quality archival digital print on Somerset velvet radiant white paper, 400 x 500 mm £60, edition of 99. Buy it on the Garudio Studiage Shop here, or if you still want the tea towel, we still have a few left here.
they got in touch with us at Garudio Studiage to see if we would design
them a new tea towel to help them raise money.

The design is based on
our ‘classic’ Dogs of London tea towel, and features dogs they have
re-homed over the years. We picked one from each of the 16 most
‘rescued’ dog breeds in London, according to their records (King Charles
Spaniel, Border Terrier, Chihuahua, Husky, Greyhound, Dogue de
Bordeaux, Jack Russel Terrier, Border Collie, Golden Retriever, German
Shepherd, Bichon Frise, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier,
Beagle, Rottweiler and French Bulldog). The tea towel has a 'Was and Now' feature for each dog, so you can find out their story, after Stephanie from ADM tirelessly interviewed each owner! Myself and Chris worked on the
design and illustrations, and ended up adopting our own furry friend
from them! A Pomeranian x some-kind of-terrier (a Pomme-de- terre?!) we
have named Dante. All proceeds from the tea towel sales go back to All
Dogs Matter, you can buy one here.
A new screen print I have been working on for a while is now available on the Garudio Studiage shop here. I had been looking at ways of portaying a group of animals with some visual similarlites - in this case ones with stripes! To get away from the formal style of some of my previous previous prints, I experimented more with layering and collaging the images. Although the style of drawing alludes to natural history illustrations, the compostition and categorising are more unscientific.

Painting in watercolour again has been quite challenging, especially on a large scale (all these paintings are 56 x 76 cms), not much room for mistakes! I have painted about 10 on this scale so far, most went wrong somewhere... these are a few I was most happy with.
The festivals these ones are from are The Ride of Kings, Czech Republic, Chagu Chagu Umakko, Japan and Caballos del Vino, Spain.
<span lang="EN" style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">I have a piece of work in an exhibition 'The Thames The Artery of London' about the
river Thames, curated by Plastic Propaganda, on at Devon House, St Katherine
Docks, 4th – 18th December.

<span lang="EN" style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">My piece is a 3 colour screen print ‘Sea Monster Soup’
40 x 50cm.

<span lang="EN" style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">This piece is inspired by the 1850 engraving 'Monster Soup commonly called Thames Water <span lang="EN" style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">by William Heath, a satire
of a microscopic examination by Arthur Hassell <span lang="EN" style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">of the water supplied to the
inhabitants of London portraying the ‘monsters’ found in a drop of water from
the Thames. Just 50 years ago, the Thames was so polluted it was declared
"biologically extinct", too dirty for anything to survive there. But sightings of various marine mammals and other species over the last few years
confirm that the river is springing back to life.

Here are a few muscle shells I painted while in Cornwall recently... all on A4 watercolour paper. I was interested in how you think they all look the same, but once you start looking close, they are all very unique, with different patterns and shades. Most of these shells were from Polzeath beach; I collected them from several beaches to compare from each location.
Snow Leopard, Snow Monkey (Japanese Macaque), Snowy Owl and Snow Wolf - in my opinion the best in snow!
